What Physicians Need to Know About Acute Therapy Protocols

To reduce wait times for patients and satisfy JCAHO requirements, the MEC has adopted a policy change regarding therapy protocols and liberal interpretation of all non-specific orders. Cedars-Sinai now interprets all general orders for therapy as protocol patients.

According to Richard Riggs, M.D., Chair and Medical Director of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the four therapy protocols include Physical Therapy Mobility Protocol, Occupational Therapy Protocol, Speech-Language Pathology Protocol and Swallowing Therapy Protocol.

These protocols will allow the therapist to evaluate the patient and to initiate therapy for routine treatment based on the protocol, eliminating the delay to obtain clarification orders from the physician.

If the physician order is specific to a procedure, treatment will be initiated as per specific order, and further clarification will be required.
