Deadline for National Provider Identifier is May 23


In just about 100 days, healthcare providers such as physicians, dentists and pharmacists MUST use a National Provider Identifier (NPI) when conducting standard electronic transactions, even if they use billing agencies to prepare them.


Physician Announcements

The following physician announcements were made at the February 5 MEC meeting:


FDA Medwatch: Methadone

The FDA has reviewed reports of death and life-threatening adverse events such as respiratory depression and cardiac arrhythmias in patients receiving methadone. These adverse events are the possible result of unintentional methadone overdoses, drug interactions, and methadone's cardiac toxicities (QT prolongation and Torsades de Pointes).

 
 

Since opening its doors last year, Cedars-Sinai's International Stem Cell Institute has begun conducting research involving stem cells in areas such as early human development, inherited diseases, neural repair and regeneration, cardiological and musculoskeletal disorders.


Effective Feb. 1, 2007, the Cytogenetics Laboratory, formerly administered by the Department of Medical Genetics, has become a part of the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine.


Cedars-Sinai representatives from the Dept. of Medicine will be handing out free coffee, breakfast munchies and sweetheart candies to physicians on February 14 in the South Mezzanine lobby.

Pathology Dept. Recognized for Academic Productivity

The Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine has been commended by the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP) for becoming one of the top 10 percent of institutions contributing scientific abstracts that were peer-reviewed and accepted for presentation at the upcoming 2007 USCAP Meeting.
