Clinical System Vendor Demos a Success

Clinical System Demos Draw Hands-On Participation from Medical Staff

By John G. Harold, M.D., & William W. Brien, M.D.
Co-Chairs, Physician Advisory Team, Clinical System Selection

Last week's hands-on opportunity to test the systems of each of the two vendor finalists in Cedars-Sinai's Clinical Information System selection process was a huge success and generated a great deal of interest from our medical staff. Physicians, including faculty and attending staff, comprised one-third of the over 500 individuals who dropped in at the open sessions, held July 17-20 for Epic and Eclipsys, and many of the physicians stayed for an hour or longer to personally test the systems.

The remainder of the participant group included members of the nursing and Pharmacy staff, so we are getting a broad-based evaluation of the systems.

Except during extremely busy times, the demonstrations were one-on-one with vendor experts, allowing the medical staff to use and rate each system based on their own practice-based needs. An outstanding number of you were able to take time out of your busy schedules to attend sessions for both vendors, to compare and contrast the two systems, and provide formalized evaluations. Information from these questionnaires will be invaluable in making a final selection.

As a "thank you" for your time and input, the names of the physicians who completed the vendor comparison will be included in a random drawing, and medical staff dues for the physician selected in the drawing will be waived for one cycle. The winner will be announced in the August 3 issue of Pulse.

The culmination of the selection process is scheduled for the end of September. In the interim, feedback from the drop-in sessions will be evaluated, and further detailed analysis by the Care Delivery and Pharmacy teams will be provided. In addition, comprehensive reference checks will be made.

We will provide information about the process in future issues of Pulse. If you have any other questions, please feel free to e-mail Beth Hallman, director of Clinical Systems, at: Elisabeth.Hallman@cshs.org.
