Accessing Medication Lists

The Web/VS medication lists display medication order data that is transferred from the inpatient pharmacy system (HartMeds), the ICU clinical information system (CareVue), the outpatient electronic medical record system (Centricity/Logician), the outpatient pharmacy system (Etreby), the Emergency Department system (EmStat), the Labor & Delivery system (WatchChild), and the pulmonary lab system.

ICU medication lists are updated hourly; inpatient pharmacy medication lists are updated every three hours, and the other types of medication lists are transferred as the result of patient visits.

The medication lists for an individual patient can be accessed in Web/VS in several locations. The most common method of access is via the "Recent Results" screen, which has an entry for one medication list per calendar day, with the current medication list typically appearing near the top of the screen.

You can click on the medication list title to view the full medication list in a pop-up window and then click on an individual medication to view the details of that medication order. This method provides a convenient way to view the medication list as of a specific date and time.

The second method is to pick Medications from the "Reports" menu. A summary of all the available medication lists for the patient appears in the right-hand pane of the window. You can then click on an individual medication list title to view the medications for the patient as of a particular date and time. The third method is to view the QuickLook report, which includes a concise version of the medication list.

The initial medication list shows the start date, medication name, stop date, and status (if known). The list is divided into one to several sections, depending on the patient's medications. There are separate sections for scheduled medications, PRN medications, and IVs or compound medications. The dose column for each medication is hotlinked to detailed administration information, including special instructions and sliding scale (if any). The medication lists are also hotlinked to knowledge bases from Micromedex and Ovid ClineGuide. Clicking on a book icon to the right of a medication name on the main medication list will open the corresponding knowledge base in a new window and position it on the same medication, if possible.

Note: the medication lists reflect what has been ordered, not what has been administered.
