Jeffrey H. Fair, M.D., has won the 2008 Winnick Clinical Scholars Award at Cedars-Sinai for his proposal entitled "Enhanced endodermal differentiation and selection strategies of human embryonic stem cells for hepatic cellular transplantation." The award, provided by the generosity of the Winnick Family, supports cutting edge clinical investigation by faculty members. Dr. Fair, a liver surgeon, currently serves as director of Translational Research in the Department of Surgery.

Maria Castro, Ph.D., co-director of the Board of Governors Gene Therapeutics Research Institute, has been selected as an honoree at the 2008 Women of Action Luncheon hosted by the Israel Cancer Research Fund on August 13 at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Dr. Castro, who is being honored for her groundbreaking research and accomplishments at Cedars-Sinai, is one of four women receiving the Woman of Action award.

Gayla Nielsen, R.N., Ph.D., has joined Cedars-Sinai has the director of the Emergency Department. Previously, Nielsen was at St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland and has more than 20 years of experience in management. Nielsen received her Ph.D. at UCLA and her Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Utah, Salt Lake City.
