And It Began with a Doctor Who Wanted to Eliminate Pain

On March 30, 1842, Dr. Crawford W. Long used sulphuric ether to administer the first anesthetic for a surgical procedure -- the removal of a neck tumor. In appreciation of the Cedars-Sinai medical staff, the ad below appears in today's Los Angeles Times.

Cedars-Sinai Initiates New Procedure to Identify Patients with Difficult Airways

Cedars-Sinai has initiated a new procedure to identify patients with known difficult airways by placing a green band on their wrists, in addition to the white identifying wristband. A green notification sticker will also be placed at the top of the patient's Safety Alert Form.

In honor of Doctors' Day, we asked several Cedars-Sinai physicians why they decided to pursue a medical career. Here's what they said:

"...to wake up everyday and know that you are making a difference in a child's life" -- Marla Dubinsky, M.D.

"...because of my grandfather, who did everything from delivering babies to lending people money" -- Joe Kim, M.D.

"I had an accident with a lot of facial trauma..." -- Ashley Wachsman, M.D.
