The Web/VS Tip of the Week

Why Web/VS Times Out

HIPAA requires us to have a policy on the accessibility of patient records via computer and timeout periods. Based on external and internal security audit findings, recommendations and industry best practices, the timeout period is set at 10 minutes per the Cedars-Sinai security policy.

For questions or concerns about the policy, please contact the Corporate Compliance Office at (323) 866-7880.

Web/VS will time out in 10 minutes if there is no activity when viewing an individual patient record. No activity consists of scrolling within a long report or a long view of "current results" without actually changing a menu or clicking a hotlink. The timer will reset, however, if you are changing from one flowsheet to another, changing any menu and clicking GO, displaying the contents of a report, drilling down, etc. Clicking on "Another Patient" will also reset the timer.

When editing dictations, as long as you are pressing keys, the timer resets with every keystroke. The system should not timeout unless you don't touch the keyboard for 10 minutes. As an extra precaution, we suggest hitting the "Save as Draft" button during your editing process.
