Run for Her Raises Nearly $700,000

More than 4,000 runners and walkers, including more than a dozen physicians, took to the streets surrounding The Grove in Los Angeles on Sunday, Nov. 14, for the sixth annual run for her® 5K Run and Friendship Walk.

This year’s event raised nearly $700,000 for ovarian cancer research at the Cedars-Sinai Women’s Cancer Research Institute at the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute, according to Beth Y. Karlan, M.D., director of the Women's Cancer Research Institute, the Division of Gynecologic Oncology in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Gilda Radner Hereditary Cancer Detection Program.

Since the race started in 2005, it has raised nearly $4 million to support ovarian cancer research. Through the virtual “Sleepwalkers Across America®” program, people registered in all 50 states. In addition to the United States, nine countries were represented, including China, France and Switzerland.

Donations will be accepted at www.runforher.com through Dec. 31.

(l-r) Diane Shader-Smith, Dr. Beth Karlan and Cindy Karlan celebrate after the event.

Charles F. Simmons Jr., M.D., chair of the Department of Pediatrics and director of the Division of Neonatology, ran with his daughter Ally.
