David L. Rimoin, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Rimoin, director of the Medical Genetics Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, recently received a proclamation from the City of Los Angeles for his work in developing a genetic screening program for members of the Persian Jewish community. He received the honor at the home of Katherine and Herbert Kahen in Beverly Hills.

Jennifer Badger from Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's office praised Dr. Rimoin and members of Cedars-Sinai's Department of Pathology for their significant and pioneering work.

One thousand free confidential tests were administered to members of the Persian Jewish community to screen for four common inherited disorders within the population.

"Among the 1,000 people tested, we found seven affected individuals and 10 couples where both were carriers of the same disease and thus at a 25 percent risk of having an affected child with each pregnancy. If we screen the entire Persian Jewish population, we can eliminate, prevent or treat these diseases in this community, as we did with Tay Sachs disease in Ashkenazi Jews," said Dr. Rimoin.
