This month, donors receive a movie ticket or Sodexo meal ticket, plus coupons good for the Plaza Level Starbucks and a free pint of Baskin-Robbins' ice cream. To donate blood, contact John Barr at barrjx@cshs.org or ext. 3-2637. To donate platelets, contact Nina Vinick at vinickn@cshs.org or ext. 3-2414. The blood donor facility is located in Room 1690 on the Street Level of the South Tower.

Presentation on Patent Law - Aug. 31

Learn about the latest developments in patent law concerning medical diagnostic technologies at "Mayo Collaborative Services v. Prometheus Labs, Inc." The discussion will be led by Seth Levy, patent attorney at Nixon Peabody, and Marla Dubinsky, MD, director of the Cedars-Sinai Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease Program, Abe and Claire Levine Chair in Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease and associate professor of pediatrics. The program will be held on Friday, Aug. 31, from 1:15 to 2 p.m. in the Davis Building, Plaza Level, Room 1004.

Los Angeles and Its Newspaper - Sept. 7

Cedars-Sinai Emeritus Physician's Society will host Jim Newton, author and journalist, who will discuss "Los Angeles and Its Newspaper: A Brief History" on Friday, Sept. 7. The event runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Harvey Morse Auditorium. The lecture is free and lunch is $15 for non-emeritus members. Parkinson's Disease Conference - Sept. 8

This free conference is designed for patients, families and caregivers who want to learn more about the management of Parkinson's disease using a comprehensive team approach. Association for Women in Science Meeting - Sept. 11

Anyone interested in promoting women in science is invited to this monthly coffee meeting. It will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 11, from 4 to 5 p.m. in Davis Room 1004. Light snacks provided.

2012 Rehabilitation Exposition - Sept. 12

Cedars-Sinai Acute Therapy Services, Inpatient Rehabilitation, Outpatient Rehabilitation Services and Neuropsychology celebrate National Rehabilitation Awareness Week with the 2012 Rehabilitation Exposition on Wednesday, Sept. 12, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in Harvey Morse Auditorium. This annual event celebrates National Rehabilitation Awareness Week. It aims to educate people about the rehabilitation programs offered at Cedars-Sinai, provide an opportunity to interact with rehabilitation staff and former patients, and advocate for people who have disabilities and those who have needed these services. Optimal Care and New Therapies for Advanced Heart Disease - Sept. 15

This one-day course features expert presenters on topics related to the diagnosis, treatment and management of advanced heart disease. The workshop will be held Saturday, Sept. 15, from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Riverside Marriott.

Rehabilitation Topics in the Management of Brain Injury - Sept. 15

This one-day conference reviews recent advances in technology and research that can influence the course of recovery of the person with a brain injury. A discussion on the patho-physiology of brain injury and the management of concussion will provide a basic review of the topic. The workshop will be held Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Luxe Hotel from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Gallows Humor: Medical Ethics, Medical Humanities and the Dark Side of Laughter - Sept. 19

Katie L. Watson, JD, assistant professor of Medical Humanities and Bioethics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, will speak at the Ethics Noon Conference on Wednesday, Sept. 19, from noon to 1 p.m. in Harvey Morse Auditorium. The event is sponsored by Cedars-Sinai's Center for Healthcare Ethics. Lunch will be available at 11:30 a.m.

Medicine in Space - Sept. 20

Gregg A. Bendrick, MD, MPH, chief medical officer of the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base, will speak at this Cedars-Sinai Alumni Association event on Thursday, Sept. 20. A question-and-answer session will follow Bendrick's lecture and the association will present a film depicting dramatic events surrounding one of the lunar missions. Registration is at 6 p.m. with the presentation following at 6:30 p.m. in Harvey Morse Auditorium. Admission is $15 for the general public and Cedars-Sinai employees and $5 for paid alumni members, volunteers and those in training.

The Cedars-Sinai Regenerative Medicine Scientific Symposium, "Regenerative Approaches to Diabetes and Diseases of the Eye," will be held Friday, Sept. 21, in the Harvey Morse Auditorium. 13th Annual HIV/AIDS Conference - Sept. 28

This 13th annual conference will provide physicians and allied healthcare professionals with an interactive and engaging learning environment that addresses the evolution of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. With a combined focus on evidence-based practice and social issues, this conference represents a singular opportunity to access cutting-edge research while collaborating with eminent professionals to develop best interaction and treatment practices for this population. State of the Art Spine Care 2012 - Sept. 29

This conference will focus on the management of spine patients for primary-care and first-contact providers. Topics include: the basics of spine issues, imaging available for assistance in diagnosis, definitions of pain and its management, conservative treatment options, current spine techniques and technologies, and management of the pre- and post-surgical spine patient. The event will be held Saturday, Sept. 29, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Harvey Morse Auditorium.

Annual Meeting of the Medical Staff - Oct. 22

The annual meeting will be held on Monday, Oct. 22, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Harvey Morse Auditorium. Highlights include reports from the chief of staff and medical center leadership as well as the presentation of the Chief of Staff Award and the 2012 Pioneer in Medicine Award.

Medical Student Reception - Sept. 8

All medical staff members are invited to attend the annual Medical Student Reception on Tuesday, Oct. 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Harvey Morse Auditorium. The event includes a campus tour at 5:30 p.m. as well as dinner followed by a panel discussion of Cedars-Sinai's training opportunities, campus facilities and mission.
