Addition to Formulary Declined; FDA Warns About ADHD Drug

Pharmacy Focus

The Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee declined to add recombinant human thrombin to the formulary at its Dec. 3 meeting. Also, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning that methylphenidate products, one type of stimulant drug used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), may in rare instances cause prolonged and sometimes painful erections known as priapism.

ICD-10 Information Sessions Coming Up

Physicians can learn how the new ICD-10 coding system will affect them at two information sessions this month. ICD-10: Physician Impact is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 21, from noon-1 p.m. in ECC A-B, and Wednesday, Jan. 22, from 5-6 p.m. in Harvey Morse 1-3.

Thirty-five physician champions have been identified to help lead the conversion to the ICD-10 coding system, the Medical Executive Committee learned at its meeting Jan. 6.

King Day Celebration Set for Jan. 20

The 12th annual celebration of the life and work of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be held in Harvey Morse Auditorium on Jan. 20, the holiday that marks the slain civil rights leader's birth. King would have turned 85 on Jan. 15. The celebration, co-sponsored by the medical staff and the medical center, will begin at noon and will last about an hour.

Night at the Museum Takes Place Feb. 28

Medical staff members and their families are invited to A Night at the Museum, a dinner and sleepover at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, on Friday, Feb. 28.

Circle of Friends Honorees for December

The Circle of Friends program honored 303 people in December. Circle of Friends allows grateful patients to make a donation in honor of the physicians, nurses, caregivers and others who have made a difference during their time at Cedars-Sinai.

Helping Overseas Is Part of Physician's Mission

What does a doctor do when he plans a trip from Los Angeles to Thailand for a medical mission, only to discover that the local government has forbidden foreign physicians to treat the populace? Daniel Hoh, MD, a Cedars-Sinai Emergency Department physician, faced that challenge when he traveled with fellow doctors and nurses from his church to a remote region last fall.
