ICD-10 Readiness: Oct. 1 Change Is Coming Soon

Dear Colleagues,

The implementation of ICD-10 appears to be on track for Oct. 1 — about 60 days from now. Recently, the American Medical Association and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services jointly announced a 12-month transition period for our professional fee coding specificity. During this time, although physician claims will not be denied due to an imprecise code, a valid ICD-10 code must be provided. While this grace period will allows us to practice our coding in our offices, it does not provide the hospital with such leeway.

Nominations Sought for Pioneer in Medicine Award

Deadline for Submissions Is Aug. 10

Attending physicians on the medical staff are encouraged to nominate a candidate for the 2015 Pioneer in Medicine award. This award is given to a member of the medical staff who has made clinical and research contributions recognized at Cedars-Sinai and in the national or international medical communities. The deadline for nominations is Monday, Aug. 10.

Cedars-Sinai Innovation Attacks Heart Failure

Cedars-Sinai has become the first hospital in the nation to leverage its electronic health record to help identify patients with heart failure. CS-Link™ now has the functionality to assist with identifying patients who may have congestive heart failure, based on a new heart failure bundle developed by Cedars-Sinai.

ProPublica 'Surgeon Scorecard'

On July 14, 2015, the independent, nonprofit investigative journalism organization ProPublica released a "Surgeon Scorecard" for eight procedures. It reviewed five years of Medicare claims data (2009-13) for more than 17,000 surgeons, including more than 40 surgeons who have medical staff privileges at Cedars-Sinai. ProPublica evaluated the physicians based on "complication rates" for eight procedures:

Clinical Documentation Course Continues Aug. 4

Participants Can Earn Two Continuing Medical Education Credits

Members of the medical staff can take a "Clinical Documentation Integrity Power Course for Physicians" that meets the first Tuesday of each month through Dec. 1. The Aug. 4 session takes place from from 3:30-6:30 p.m. in PEC 8. Participants need to attend just one session. Two continuing medical education credits will be available.

Ebola Drill Tests Cedars-Sinai's Readiness

Cedars-Sinai is one of only a few hospitals in the western U.S. that is equipped to assess a patient with suspected Ebola, a highly infectious disease. To help maintain Cedars-Sinai's readiness, more than 25 medical staff members and employees participated in a July 24 drill designed to prepare medical center staff to receive a suspected Ebola patient.

Research Facility Helps Connect 'Whole Pipeline'

Cedars-Sinai marked a milestone when it opened a facility where researchers can store millions of tissue and blood samples, analyze them and generate an array of digital images to advance scientific discovery. The facility realizes a longtime dream of institutional leaders. One physician said it looked "like a James Bond movie."
