Vrahas Starts as Founding Chair of Orthopaedics

Mark Vrahas, MD, began serving as the founding chair of Cedars-Sinai's new Department of Orthopaedics on Monday. He arrives at Cedars-Sinai with an international reputation for clinical excellence, and building and leading highly effective orthopedic trauma programs. He was most recently the Robert W. Lovett Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School and vice chair for Population Health and OR Operations at Massachusetts General Hospital's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.

U.S. News Ranks Cedars-Sinai Nationally in 11 Specialties

Cedars-Sinai has 11 medical specialties nationally ranked and has been named to the Honor Roll in U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Hospitals 2016-17" issue that was released this week. Cedars-Sinai was ranked in the top 20 hospitals nationwide (it was number 17), placing it among a group of top healthcare organizations.

Milestone Kidney Transplant Chain Saves 3 Lives

A 42-year-old Los Angeles filmmaker came across an article about the extraordinary challenges facing kidney patients and decided to donate one of his kidneys. His generosity led to six surgeries earlier this year that created a three-way, living donor transplant chain — the longest to date at Cedars-Sinai.

CS, Rams Partner to Promote Health and Wellness

Cedars-Sinai is playing an important role in the return of the Los Angeles Rams, partnering with the storied NFL team to promote health and wellness for children and families across the region. With the football season getting underway, the two organizations are preparing to roll out community outreach programs that highlight the importance of exercise, healthy eating, preventive healthcare and health education.

Learn About Medical Mission to Guatemala

Staff members interested in participating in Cedars-Sinai's annual medical mission to Guatemala next April are invited to attend a recruitment meeting on Sunday, Aug. 21, from 10-11:30 a.m. in Harvey Morse 1-2. The 2017 mission will take place April 1-10.

Special Ticket Pricing for Dodgers' Healthcare Night

Cedars-Sinai staff members are invited to take advantage of special ticket pricing for Healthcare Night on Wednesday, Aug. 24, as the Los Angeles Dodgers take the field against the San Francisco Giants. Linda Burnes Bolton, DrPH, RN, FAAN, health system chief nursing executive, vice president and chief nursing officer, will throw out a ceremonial first pitch at Dodger Stadium.

Scientist Talks Health on Korean-Language Radio

Jayoung Kim, PhD, leans forward in her chair, edging close to an oversize microphone. She hunkers down for a half-hour taping session, her navy blue scrubs and white lab coat providing warmth in the chilly recording studio at Radio K 1230 AM in Koreatown. Kim's five-minute spots, each focusing on topical health issues, air three times daily, Monday through Friday.

Clinical Scholar Gets an A in Landing Grants

Stephen Shiao, MD, PhD, has been on something of a grant roll, racking up five research awards totaling more than $2.5 million over the last three years. Shiao, a radiation oncologist at the Cedars-Sinai Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute, credits the Clinical Scholars Program with strengthening his skills in crafting winning grant proposals.

Nominations Sought for Pioneer in Medicine Award

Members of the medical staff are encouraged to nominate a candidate for the 2016 Pioneer in Medicine award. This award is given to a member of the medical staff who has made clinical and research contributions recognized at Cedars-Sinai and in the national or international medical communities.

Core Lab Transitions Tests to Abbott Platforms

Effective Thursday, Sept. 1, the Core Laboratories in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine will be transitioning seven tests to Abbott Diagnostics. This change is being made in order to improve operational efficiency and quality.

The Circle of Friends program honored 92 people in July. Circle of Friends allows grateful patients to make a donation in honor of the physicians, nurses, caregivers and others who have made a difference during their time at Cedars-Sinai.
