Cedars-Sinai will play a critical role in bolstering the nation’s front-line defense against Ebola and other highly communicable diseases under a federal grant meant to improve the response to emerging medical threats. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has tapped Cedars-Sinai to serve as a regional treatment center.

Robert H. Baloh, MD, PhD, Wins PRISM Award

Robert H. Baloh, MD, PhD

Robert H. Baloh, MD, PhD, associate professor and director of Neuromuscular Medicine at the Cedars-Sinai Department of Neurology, is the recipient of the 2016 Prize for Research in Scientific Medicine (PRISM) award. The $10,000 prize recognizes outstanding scientific or medical breakthroughs achieved in the preceding five years by Cedars-Sinai faculty members. Baloh received the honor June 15 at the commencement of the Cedars-Sinai Graduate Program in Biomedical Science and Translational Medicine.

Stanley Jordan, MD, has received the Award for Outstanding Achievement in Transplantation (Clinical) from The Transplantation Society. The society's award committee unanimously selected Jordan as its recipient in recognition of his contribution to the field.

FDA Cautions Against Zecuity Patches, High Doses of Loperamide and Aspirin Overuse

Pharmacy Focus

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning about heart problems associated with taking higher-than-recommended doses of the common over-the-counter and prescription diarrhea medicine loperamide. Also, the FDA has temporarily suspended sales of Zecuity patches for migraine headaches over concerns of burning and scarring. And the agency warned about the risks of serious bleeding that can result from taking too much aspirin, which is contained in over-the-counter products for stomach upset.

Cedars-Sinai is conducting its most ambitious fundraising effort in the history of the institution – the Campaign for Cedars-Sinai – with a goal of raising $600 million by 2018. Sweat Chloride Tests Will Halt in Mid-July

Due to low use, sweat chloride testing employed in the diagnosis of cystic fibrosis will be halted effective July 17. The sweat chloride test is still a mainstay of laboratory confirmation, but other tests for specific mutations, nasal potential difference, immunoreactive trypsinogen, stool fecal fat or pancreatic enzyme secretion can be useful as well.

A new batch of books has landed at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Library. The topics include a wide range of topics, including cardiology, endocrinology, nephrology, nursing, orthopedics and others.
