Advance Made in Treating Recurrent Prostate Cancer

Adding hormonal therapy to radiation treatment can significantly improve the average long-term survival of men with prostate cancer who have had their prostate gland removed, according to a Cedars-Sinai study published in the Feb. 2 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. The regimen also can reduce how often the cancer spreads, the study found.

Heart-Focused Studies Earn Malaniak Awards

The body's most important muscle — the heart — was the focus of this year's winners of the Bohdan (Danny) Malaniak Award for Excellence in Postdoctoral Research. Lilian Grigorian, MD, PhD, won for her work on rejuvenating aging hearts, and Magali Noval Rivas, PhD, won for her Kawasaki disease study. Each scientist received a $3,000 prize.

Former NICU Patient Reunites With Staff for Birthday

Corey Nabonne was born on Feb. 15, 1977, at just 2.2 pounds and was taken to the Cedars-Sinai Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Four decades later, the San Diego resident returned to the NICU and reunited with a doctor and a nurse who once cared for him.

The Circle of Friends program honored 194 people in January. Circle of Friends allows grateful patients to make a donation in honor of the physicians, nurses, caregivers and others who have made a difference during their time at Cedars-Sinai.

Weiner Installed as President of Regional Board of Rabbis

Rabbi Jason Weiner, senior rabbi and manager of the Spiritual Care Department, was installed as president of the Board of Rabbis of Southern California at a Feb. 15 reception in Harvey Morse Auditorium. The Board of Rabbis, the region's only cross-denominational rabbinic professional organization, has more than 250 ordained rabbi members throughout Southern California.

Medical Library Provides 24-hour Access for Residents

The Cedars-Sinai Medical Library now offers 24-hour access for residents. An ID badge is required for entry. The library also has opened two new group study rooms, which are designed to serve as collaborative learning spaces for residents.
