Cardiac Experts to Keynote Research Day VIII

Two of the nation's top experts on the genetic basis of cardiac disease will be the keynote speakers Friday at Cedars-Sinai Research Day VIII, the latest in a series of annual events celebrating the institution's scientific achievements. The event will include a poster session with scores of research studies.

Expanded Use of Three-Day Alerts for Antibiotics

In an effort to reduce antimicrobial resistance and improve patient safety, Cedars-Sinai is expanding the use of three-day alerts housewide to encourage reassessment of antibiotics. As part of the alerts, clinicians who prescribe antibiotics will be prompted to indicate their plans to discontinue, modify or continue use on the third day of a patient's treatment.

Carrie and Arthur – A Bond of Love to the End

For nearly a century, Carrie Gabriel and her brother, Arthur, have shared their lives together. But their time together is fast drawing to an end. In October, Arthur, 96, a longtime Cedars-Sinai patient, was diagnosed with terminal colon cancer. He is on hospice care at home with Carrie, who turns 95 this month. She has been his primary caregiver for seven years.

Human Rights Activist to Speak at King Celebration

MLK Day Celebration

Human rights activist Nontombi Naomi Tutu will be the keynote speaker at the 15th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration on Monday, Jan. 16. All employees, physicians, visitors and patients are welcome to attend the event, which runs from noon-1 p.m. in Harvey Morse Auditorium.

Core Labs Moving to New Testosterone Analysis

The Core laboratories in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is transitioning from running total testosterone by LC/MS to total testosterone by immunoassay (Abbott Laboratories) beginning Tuesday, Jan. 31.

FDA Issues Warning Against Use of Pioglitazone and General Anesthetic Drugs for Pregnant Women and Children

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning against the use of the Type 2 diabetes medicine pioglitazone, which has been linked to an increased risk of bladder cancer. The FDA is also warning against the repeated or lengthy use of general anesthetic and sedation drugs in young children and pregnant women. Additionally, the agency has determined the risk of stop-smoking medications may not be as serious as once suspected. And the agency is alerting physicians that a commercial facility that tests for Zika virus has reported false positive results.
