Leaders Share Lessons From Choosing Wisely

Cedars-Sinai and four other large healthcare providers in California gathered last week to highlight their successes implementing the national Choosing Wisely initiative, which aims to reduce inappropriate medical tests and procedures that can do more harm than good. Physicians and other leaders from Cedars-Sinai were joined at an April 28 symposium on the medical center campus by colleagues from Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center, Sharp HealthCare in San Diego, Sutter Health in Northern California and UCLA Health.

Health Startups Shine at Accelerator Demo Day

Cedars-Sinai's health-tech accelerator marked its second graduation April 19 when seven startup companies pitched their ideas to investors during Demo Day at the Skirball Center. An estimated 400 people were on hand to hear from each of the startups in the Cedars-Sinai Accelerator powered by Techstars.

FDA Issues Warnings Against Extended Use of General Anesthetic in Young Children

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has updated a warning about the use of general anesthetic and sedation medicines for lengthy periods of time in children younger than 3 years old. The FDA is restricting the use of codeine and tramadol medicines for children. The medicines carry serious risks, including slowed or difficult breathing and death, which appear to be greater in children under 12 years old.

PET-MRI Scanner Available for Clinical Studies

PET-MRI scanner co

Cedars-Sinai's PET-MRI scanner, a highly sophisticated diagnostic imaging tool that provides superior image quality and uses low radiation doses, is now licensed for clinical studies. Cedars-Sinai is one of the few medical centers in the United States to be equipped with the hybrid scanner.

Cancer Research Foundation Honors Figlin

Robert A. Figlin, MD

Robert A. Figlin, MD, deputy director of the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute, was honored Thursday, May 4, with the Tower Cancer Research Foundation's Healing Award at the 15th Annual Tower of Hope Gala. The event recognizes those who have dedicated their work and lives to the awareness and eradication of cancer.

Summer Is Coming, and So Are Fireworks

Celebrate Independence Day at the Hollywood Bowl with fireworks and music by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and a special musical guest, Grammy-winning a cappella group Pentatonix. The event on Monday, July 3, is open to Cedars-Sinai physicians and their immediate family members. Cost is $140 per adult and $70 per child 3-11 years of age.

Crosswalk to Beverly Center to Close Temporarily

Because of construction at the Beverly Center, the crosswalk from Gracie Allen Drive to the mall is temporarily closed to pedestrians. The closure, which is expected to last through June, impacts hundreds of Cedars-Sinai employees who park at the Beverly Center.
