President's Perspective: Reduce Costs Yet Grow

On the surface, they seem like contradictory goals: reduce costs yet grow strategically. How can you do both at the same time? This is a question that arises in almost every organization, including Cedars-Sinai, when it faces the need to reduce costs to remain financially viable while upholding its mission. Certainly, the simplest approach is to stop investing in any program expansion or new opportunities while engaged in cost reductions. The main problem with this approach is that it ignores an organization’s long-term goals. It places convenience ahead of mission.

Dan Theodorescu, MD, Named SOCCI Director

Renowned cancer clinician and scientist Dan Theodorescu, MD, PhD, has been named director of the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute at Cedars-Sinai. Theodorescu, a nationally recognized translational cancer researcher and leading expert in bladder cancer, will direct the oncology enterprise at Cedars-Sinai known for quality of clinical care, integration of services across a growing network of providers and the breadth of research programs charting new therapeutic frontiers. He assumes his new duties July 1.

Street Closures for LA Pride Celebration, June 7-11

Several area streets will be closed before and during the annual LA Pride Festival, of which Cedars-Sinai is a sponsor. Please plan for delays and allow for extra commute time during the event in West Hollywood. San Vicente Boulevard between Santa Monica Boulevard and Melrose Avenue will be closed from Thursday, June 7, at 7 p.m. until Monday, June 11, at 10 a.m.

RSVPs Due Soon for June 13 Commencement

Six graduate students will don academic hoods June 13 for the commencement of the Cedars-Sinai Graduate Programs in Biomedical and Translational Sciences. The commencement will be held at 4 p.m. in Harvey Morse Auditorium, and will feature a keynote address by Leon Fine, MD, professor of Biomedical Sciences and Medicine. Cedars-Sinai Helps Launch 'All of Us' Research

Cedars-Sinai this month helped launch a groundbreaking precision medicine project that aims to speed up research breakthroughs by gathering health information from 1 million people in the U.S. Scientists in the All of Us Research Program—led by the National Institutes of Health—are gathering genetic, biological, environmental, health and lifestyle data from volunteer participants over a 10-year period. The investigators hope to use the information to conduct thousands of future health studies.

Corday Winner Sees Big Future in Tiny Particles

Julio C. Palmaz was at Cedars-Sinai on May 8 to accept the Smidt Heart Institute's 2018 Eliot Corday, MD, International Prize in Heart Research, which recognizes physicians and scientists who have conducted groundbreaking research in cardiology or cardiac surgery. Palmaz predicted that the biggest breakthroughs in catheter-based or interventional cardiology will come from the smallest of particles.

Investigators to Examine Depression in Heart Patients

Cedars-Sinai investigators, led by Waguih William IsHak, MD, professor of Psychiatry and vice chair of Education and Research, have been awarded $2.6 million to study and compare evidence-based approaches for treating depression in people with advanced heart failure.

Core Labs Latest Update of eGFR Panels

The Core Laboratories in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is making an addendum to an earlier update regarding the inclusion of estimated glomerular filtration rate on renal function panels. This latest update will go live Monday, June 18.

Figueiredo Appointed to New Post

Jane Figueiredo, PhD, has been named associate director of the Center for Integrated Research on Cancer and Lifestyle for Epidemiology at Cedars-Sinai. Figueiredo joined the Cedars-Sinai faculty in 2016—following her post at the Keck School of Medicine of USC—as director of Community and Population Health Research at the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute.

Andrew Klein, MD, Inducted as ICS-US President

Andrew Klein, MD, Esther and Mark Schulman Chair in Surgery and Transplantation Medicine and director of the Comprehensive Transplant Center, has been inducted as the 66th president of the United States Section of the International College of Surgeons.

AHSP Pharmacy Changing Weekday Hours

During a three-month test program, the Advanced Health Sciences Pavilion pharmacy will be changing its weekday hours of operation beginning Monday, June 11. The new AHSP pharmacy hours will be Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Weekend hours will remain the same—9:30 a.m.-6 p.m.

FDA Warns About Oral Benzocaine Products

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning that over-the-counter oral drug products containing benzocaine should not be used to treat infants and children younger than 2 years old. The products carry serious risks and could cause a potentially fatal blood disorder.

Summer Is Coming, and So Are Fireworks

Celebrate Independence Day at the Hollywood Bowl with fireworks and music by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and special musical guest, The Go-Go’s. The event on Tuesday, July 3, is open to Cedars-Sinai physicians and their immediate family members. Cost is $140 per adult and $70 per child, 3-11 years of age.
