Cedars-Sinai Cares for Thousands at Telemundo Health Fair

Thousands of low-income Los Angeles residents received free health screenings, vaccinations and wellness education from physicians, nurses and health professionals from Cedars-Sinai, a partner with Telemundo 52 Los Angeles/KVEA for its 14th annual Health Fair, La Feria de la Salud. The daylong event on March 11 brought together 18 community organizations, which offered free health screenings and education to an estimated 25,000 residents at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Barbers Lower Blood Pressure in African-American Men

African-American men successfully lowered their high blood pressure to healthy levels when aided by a pharmacist and their local barber, according to a new study from the Smidt Heart Institute. The findings were published recently in The New England Journal of Medicine and presented as a Late-Breaking Clinical Trial at the American College of Cardiology's 67th Annual Scientific Session and Expo in Orlando.

Distinguished Woman Leader: Peggy Miles, MD

In honor of National Women's History Month—celebrated in March since 1987—and International Women's Day on March 8, Pulse is featuring the achievements of our talented female leaders at Cedars-Sinai. This issue's interview is with a pioneer who was the first—and to date only—female chief of staff at Cedars-Sinai: Peggy Miles, MD. Miles was chief of staff from January 2016 to December 2017, and is an associate professor in the Department of Medicine. Miles is an active clinician-teacher and medical director of Employee Health Services.

Brainworks Program Marks 20 Years of Inspiring Students

Keith L. Black, MD, chair of the Department of Neurosurgery, welcomed about 170 middle and high school students to the annual Brainworks event on March 12. The program, which celebrated its 20th anniversary this year, is designed to expose students to scientific and technological advances in neurosurgery and other healthcare specialties to inspire the next generation of doctors and scientists.

The Cedars-Sinai Medical Library wants your opinion. The library's annual customer service survey is available now and runs through April 13. The survey goals are to better understand the information-seeking behavior of the Cedars-Sinai community, and to measure awareness and satisfaction with library services.

CS-Link Getting Lab Results to Patients

Another reason to encourage patients to sign up for My CS-Link™ is to receive lab results. While most lab results are automatically released, physicians can manually send lab results from their InBasket or from Chart Review. Personal comments can easily be added to the results as well.
