FDA Warns of Gilenya Risk, Name Confusion, Looks Into GBCA Use

Pharmacy Focus

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued warnings regarding the multiple sclerosis drug Gilenya and about reports of confusion between the names of the antidepressant Brintellix and anti-clotting drug Brilinta. Also, the agency is investigating the risk of brain deposits following repeated use of gadolinium-based contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging.

New Faculty Luncheon — Aug. 27

New faculty luncheons are informal gatherings designed to connect new faculty members. In addition, a senior faculty member is typically in attendance to share perspectives on navigating a new career at Cedars-Sinai. The luncheon will take place Thursday, Aug. 27, at noon in the Executive Conference Room, across from Harvey Morse Auditorium.

Clinical Documentation Integrity Course for Physicians — Sept. 1

Members of the medical staff can take a Clinical Documentation Integrity Power Course for Physicians that will meet the first Tuesday of each month through Dec. 1. Sessions will take place from 3:30-6:30 p.m. in various locations. The Sept. 1 session will take place in Harvey Morse 4-5. Participants need to attend just one session. Advances in Neurology and Neurosurgery 2015: Treatment and Management of Pituitary Diseases — Sept. 20

This activity is designed to provide increased awareness and improved ability to assess established and emerging treatment options for the management of pituitary disorders, a rapidly changing field. Los Angeles Orthopedic Trauma Symposium: Fractures Below the Belt — Sept. 26

The seventh annual conference will present the latest techniques and algorithms for the care of patients with complex lower extremity injuries. It will benefit orthopedic surgeons, emergency room physicians and other healthcare professionals who routinely see patients with pelvic and acetabular fractures, hip dislocations and fractures, patella fractures, peri-prosthetic femur factures and peri-articular fractures. Everyone interested in promoting women in science is invited to this monthly coffee meeting, which takes place the second Tuesday of the month from 4-5 p.m. in Davis 1004.

Annual Meeting of the Medical Staff — Oct. 19

The meeting will take place Monday, Oct. 19, from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in Harvey Morse Auditorium. It will include the chief of staff report, the CEO report and executive update, and the presentation of the Chief of Staff Award and the Pioneer in Medicine Award.

Multispecialty Plastic Surgery Symposium — Nov. 6-8

The Multispecialty Plastic Surgery Symposium and the Bernard G. Sarnat, MD, Lectureship are designed for plastic surgeons, facial plastic surgeons, oculoplastic surgeons and dermatologists involved in the care of patients with aesthetic and reconstructive needs.
