MEC Update on National Provider Identifier

NPI Compliance Must Be Met by May 23 Deadline

Medical staff members who have not yet submitted their National Provider Identifier (NPI) to Cedars-Sinai are now at risk of administrative suspension from the medical staff on May 23, 2007.

A pop-up reminder will appear in Web/VS whenever you log on, stating that the medical center does not have a record of your NPI.

Although the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently announced it would not impose penalties on entities that deploy contingency plans and make reasonable and diligent efforts to become compliant by the deadline of May 23, 2007, the deadline has NOT been postponed. Failure to apply for an NPI by May 23 would not indicate a reasonable and diligent effort to comply.

If you have not yet applied for an NPI, applications can be completed online at: https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov.

Once you have obtained your NPI, you may submit it using one of three simple ways:

  • While in Web/VS, click on User Profile. Enter your 10-digit NPI in the labeled box and click on Update My Profile. If the NPI number has been updated in the system, it will be displayed as part of the user profile.
  • Click here to write your 10-digit NPI on the attached PDF form and fax it to the Medical Staff Services Office at (310) 423-0448.
