The Web/VS Tip of the Week

Viewing Your Own Medical Records in Web/VS

Many Cedars-Sinai medical staff members and employees are also patients of the medical center, or of Cedars-Sinai physicians, and appreciate the convenience of reviewing their own lab test results and reports in Web/VS. In order to support our users' needs for access to their own protected health information, and at the same time comply with all applicable Health Information Department policies, Web/VS provides users with an online Release of Information (ROI) form. Once this form is completed, you can view your own lab results and reports in Web/VS.

The first time you log into Web/VS after your account is created, and on a yearly basis thereafter, you will be prompted with the online Release of Information form. Clicking on the "I Agree" button at the bottom of the ROI form files your agreement for permanent access by the Health Information Department, and authorizes you to review and/or copy your protected health information available electronically in Cedars-Sinai Medical Center computer systems.

You can also display the Release of Information form at any time by clicking the "ROI" button near the bottom of the blue left-hand navigation area.

Note that if you click the "I Do Not Agree Button," you will not be able to review your own results and reports in Web/VS. Instead, an error message will be displayed when you select your own medical record number (MRN).

State legislation (California Health & Safety Code Section 123148(f)) and compliance policies forbid the delivery of certain test results and reports to a patient by electronic means. This is because a direct conversation with the ordering physician or your primary care physician is considered vital to interpret such results safely. These include the following test results or other reports:

  • HIV antibody tests
  • Hepatitis antibody or antigen tests
  • Substance abuse panels
  • Toxicology screens
  • Anatomic pathology and cytology reports
  • Psychiatric records
  • Chemical dependency records
If Web/VS detects that you are looking at your own clinical information, it will suppress the display of those tests and reports wherever possible.
