Cytogenetics Lab Transitions to Path Dept.
Effective Feb. 1, 2007, the Cytogenetics Laboratory, formerly administered by the Department of Medical Genetics, has become a part of the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine. The Cytogenetics Laboratory will continue to be located in the Spielberg building.

Among the advantages of this reorganization:

  • There will be a single courier pickup system for all Laboratory and Cytogenetics specimens;
  • Duplication of some tests between Cytogenetics and Hematopathology will be eliminated;
  • Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) testing performed currently by both Cytogenetics and Hematopathology will be consolidated for better efficiency and development of new tests;
  • Outpatient marketing will be facilitated by Cedars-Sinai marketing personnel;
  • There will be operational efficiencies in shared resources.

The reorganization will also further strengthen the Cytogenetic Laboratory's technical, administrative and professional leadership:

  • The scientific and medical expertise provided by Rhona Schreck, Ph.D., and Rena Falk, M.D., will remain. Thomas Wilson, Supervisor of Cytogenetics, will continue as a supervisor.
  • Kathy Clark, former Manager of Cytogenetics, has taken a new role as Administrative Director of the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine. The new Cytogenetics manager will be Sharron Kelly.

For more information about this transition, please call Rhona Schreck at (310) 423-2878.
