500th Heart Transplant Patient

71-Year-Old Patient Is Discharged Following Smooth Recovery

After dealing with heart disease for 30 years, Howard Kaplowitz, 71, was delighted to become Cedars-Sinai's 500th heart transplant patient on October 18. Following a smooth recovery, Kaplowitz was discharged from the medical center earlier this week.

"I'm doing great now," says the Lake View Terrace resident, who had endured a heart attack, three bypasses and, finally, congestive heart failure, before the transplant. "I can't believe how easy my recovery has been."

Kaplowitz has nothing but praise for the team of nurses and physicians who cared for him. The medical team includes his cardiologist, Mehran Khorsandi, M.D.; Surgical Director of the Heart Transplant Program Sinan Simsir, M.D.; Director of the Heart Transplant Program and Associate Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery Robert M. Kass, M.D.; transplant cardiologist Ernst Schwarz, M.D., and Medical Director of the Heart Transplant Program Lawrence Czer, M.D.

"This is by far the best hospital I've ever been in," said Kaplowitz.
