New Law Requires All Hospital Workers be Vaccinated

Medical staff members who wish to get their flu vaccination can now call Employee Health Services at (310) 423-3322 to schedule an appointment for a free flu shot during weekdays. Walk-ins are also welcome. Employee Health Services is located in the Steven Spielberg Building in Suite 200.

In addition, the flu vaccine will be administered at various hospital locations on the following dates and times:

  • October 2 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in HMCC-4&5
  • October 4 from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. in HMCC-6
  • October 8 from 2:45 p.m. to 5 p.m. in HMCC-1&2
  • October 10 from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in ECC-C
  • October 15 from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. in CCR-A
  • October 16, 17 and 18 from 11:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. in CCR-A

Effective July 1, 2007, a new state law (SB 739) specifies that hospitals must offer onsite influenza vaccinations, if available, to all employees at no cost. All hospital employees are required to be vaccinated. If an employee elects not to be vaccinated, he or she must be allowed to opt out of the requirement by declining the vaccination in writing.

"While we would like all of our healthcare workers to get vaccinated, our goal is to vaccinate at least 70 percent of them," said Rekha Murthy, M.D., director of Hospital Epidemiology. "There is a plentiful supply of the flu vaccine so we should be able to accommodate all employees and patients who want a flu shot."
