Cedars-Sinai Kicks Off Stethoscope Cleaning Campaign to Raise Awareness

Cedars-Sinai launched its Stethoscope Cleaning Campaign with a special physician event on Wednesday morning on the Mezzanine level of the South Tower. Physicians were invited to stop by for a free cup of coffee and learn more about helping raise awareness about the importance of regular stethoscope cleaning.

"The event served as a good reminder to physicians to clean their stethoscope before entering a patient's room," said Debbie Lehman, M.D., associate director of Pediatric Infectious Diseases.

Do You Know What's Living on YOUR Stethoscope?

Some gram positive organisms, including Enterococcus faecalis, survived up to 18 hours on stethoscopes, according to multiple national studies.

Physicians are encouraged to help prevent the spread of these bacteria. Swabbing with an alcohol wipe significantly reduces the bacterial count on the stethoscope's diaphragm and tubing. Stethoscopes can also be cleaned with Sani-wipes, available on each quad and nurses' station.
